United Arab Emirates. The Emirates is the most modern and developed of the Gulf countries. Situated on the southeast coast of the Arabian peninsula, a new member to the Arab states, it was established in 1971. Between 1999 and 2001, I worked in Al-Ain, a city on a large oasis, 160 km. from the coastal city of Abu Dhabi. The Emirates population is expected to rise to 7.5 million in 2010, the majority being expatriates, and has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world.
